How to Determine Your Hazardous Waste Generator Status.
Do you know your hazardous waste generator status? Many healthcare facilities are unaware of their status or how to calculate it. Here’s a quick guide to help:
Track Your Hazardous Waste Disposal
Ensure you’re using an approved vendor for hazardous waste pickups. The vendor should provide a hazardous waste manifest that includes pre-assigned profile numbers. Retain a copy of this manifest, which will detail the total waste collected.Within 60 days, you should receive a Land Disposal Restriction (LDR) notification confirming proper disposal and weight. Keep this with the original manifest and maintain all records for at least three years.
Monitor Your Monthly Disposal Totals
Regularly track your hazardous waste disposal to identify your generator status and maintain compliance. The generator status categories are determined by weight generated for a calendar month:VSQG (Very Small Quantity Generator): Less than 220 pounds of hazardous waste per month or 2.2 pounds of acute hazardous waste.
SQG (Small Quantity Generator): Between 220 and 2,200 pounds of hazardous waste per month.
LQG (Large Quantity Generator): More than 2,200 pounds of hazardous waste or greater the 2.2 ponds of acute waste.
Staying informed about your generator status is key to regulatory compliance and effective waste management!
